Prestigious recognition for leading provider of video traffic management solution

Waterloo, ONTARIO –January 24, 2012 – Avvasi Inc., the award-winning leader in video traffic management and analytics solutions for fixed and mobile communication service providers (CSPs), is delighted to announce it has been selected as a finalist for a prestigious GSMA Global Mobile Award 2012. Over 600 nominations were filed and more than 170 independent analysts, journalists, academics and subject matter experts throughout the world participated in the judging of the 2012 awards. Avvasi has been shortlisted in the category of Best Mobile Broadband Technology for its Q-VUE analytics solution for the real-time measurement of video quality and usage trends of OTT video traffic. The winner will be announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, 28 February, 2012.

Avvasi Q-VUE® is the only analytics solution to provide separate indicators that account for both network conditions of video delivery (such as the spinning hour glass), and the visual fidelity or presentation quality of the video content. Providing real-time subscriber analytics means these indicators can be integrated into service provider charging and policy systems, to enable powerful use cases for operations, marketing and services teams. OTT video generates approximately 50% of mobile and fixed internet traffic. This heavy bandwidth demand results in fluctuating video quality on smartphones and tablets, and dissatisfied subscribers.

Avvasi experienced a break-through year in 2011, launching new analytics solutions and signing new customers, including WIND Mobile. Avvasi is also a founding member of CONNEXUS, a new and disruptive ecosystem and architecture aimed at enabling service providers, content providers and advertisers to become part of a connected value chain to deliver high-quality monetized video to subscribers in a multi-screen mobile and fixed broadband environment.

“We are honored to be shortlisted for a coveted 2012 GSMA Global Mobile Award. To be in the company of a number of industry heavyweights is a fervent endorsement of our technology and market leadership,” said Mate Prgin, president and CEO of Avvasi. “This tribute brings a spotlight to the challenges and opportunities presented by Over-the-Top video services and the need for video traffic solutions such as ours.”

“Reflecting the intensity of competition and innovation across the mobile ecosystem, we saw a record 600 entries and an exceptionally high quality field of contenders vying for this year’s Global Mobile Awards,” said Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer, GSMA. “It is a significant achievement to have made the shortlist, and our warmest congratulations go to all the nominees announced today. We look forward to the unveiling of the winners at the Mobile World Congress next month.”

Avvasi’s enhanced analytics offers service providers unparalleled insights into network traffic

Waterloo, ONTARIO – December 19, 2011 – the award-winning leader in video traffic management and analytics solutions for fixed and mobile communication service providers (CSPs), has launched Q-VUE 2.1, its latest analytics solution for the real-time measurement of video quality and usage trends of OTT video traffic. Avvasi video analytics eclipse traditional deep packet inspection (DPI) based network analytics, offering highly detailed measurement capabilities that report subscriber usage demographics and video-based Quality of Experience (QoE). Avvasi’s proprietary and patent pending QoE indicators provide objective indicators that are highly correlated to the subjective quality experienced by the subscriber.

Q-VUE 2.1 is the only analytics solution to provide separate indicators that account for both network conditions of video delivery (such as the spinning hour glass), and the visual fidelity or presentation quality of the video content. Providing real-time subscriber analytics means these indicators can be integrated into service provider charging and policy systems, to enable powerful use cases for operations, marketing and services teams.

OTT video generates approximately 50% of mobile and fixed internet traffic.1 This heavy bandwidth demand results in fluctuating video quality on smartphones and tablets, and dissatisfied subscribers.

As OTT video traffic continues to grow, experts agree that measuring OTT video quality is a requirement before any CSP can monetize these services and offset the cost of carrying this traffic on their networks. CSPs using Avvasi Q-VUE 2.1 to collect the detailed usage and quality information strive to understand new usage trends and are able to plan video-based revenue-generating services.

“Avvasi’s Q-VUE 2.1 is designed ground-up for the challenges of OTT video, and is battle-hardened.” said Mate Prgin, president and CEO of Avvasi. “Since its inaugural launch two years ago, Q-VUE is the culmination of tens of thousands of hours of monitoring enormous volumes of traffic, rigorous network testing and feedback from some of the most innovative CSPs, all of whom recognize that collecting in-depth analytics is crucial to their business.”

Service providers adopting Q-VUE 2.1 will benefit from a variety of unique capabilities, including:

QoE measurement of adaptive streaming protocols such as HTTP Live Streaming (Apple streaming format), and Netflix

Ability to independently monitor both delivery quality of video as well as presentation quality of video

Improved scalability capable of monitoring multiple 10Gb/s links

A number of leading network providers are already using Q-VUE 2.1, with WIND Mobile the latest CSP to recognize the value of Avvasi OTT video analytics. Avvasi will be announcing further customers in 2012.

Canadian network operator using Avvasi analytics to tackle the biggest problem
facing all mobile providers worldwide–OTT video traffic

Waterloo, ONTARIO – December 12, 2011 – Avvasi Inc., the award-winning leader in video traffic management and analytics for fixed and mobile communication service providers (CSPs), is pleased to announce that WIND Mobile is the latest service provider to adopt its OTT video analytics services, and to deploy its new Q-VUE 2.1 analytics solution.

WIND Mobile has selected Avvasi to provide greater insight into video trends and traffic patterns on the WIND Mobile network. As is consistent with the entire mobile telecommunications industry, WIND Mobile is experiencing unprecedented increases in Over-The-Top (OTT) video traffic. In order to manage its OTT video traffic, the company is looking to identify new traffic patterns and to determine how best to manage subscriber Quality of Experience (QoE). Video QoE issues such as stalls, playback delays and image distortions all negatively impact Quality of Experience, and a user’s willingness to pay for OTT services or data plans.

WIND Mobile’s Ariel Topasso, senior manager, Core Network Data & PS said, “We are using Avvasi and its Q-VUE 2.1 product because it is the only analytics solution we have found to be able to provide a comprehensive measurement of OTT video Quality of Experience, which is crucial to understand how our wireless network delivers OTT video.”

Avvasi’s solution is the only one in the world that can provide video traffic demographics, in-depth analysis of video traffic trends, and independent QoE scores that capture:

1.	The impact of network performance on OTT video.

2.	Video fidelity as viewed on specific mobile devices.

This network and QOE information is crucial to CSPs who wish to optimize their traffic management and investigate monetization opportunities.

“WIND Mobile approached us citing the same issue that many mobile network providers are experiencing – the desire to optimize their networks for video. They required detailed insight into OTT video traffic quality and chose Q-VUE as a best of breed solution for OTT video analytics” said Mate Prgin, president and CEO of Avvasi. “Many companies measure various network QoS (Quality of Service) indicators, which by no means reveals true subscriber Quality of Experience. We are the only company that can provide a real-time, scalable and accurate representation of a subscriber’s true video experience in a mobile or fixed network, for any mainstream OTT video protocol.”

Collaboration between Avvasi, BroadHop, CommProve and Spirent Communications enables service providers to reclaim relevance in OTT value chain

Denver, Dublin, Germantown and Waterloo – October 11, 2011 – Leading solution providers aiming to enable monetization of Over-the-Top (OTT) video today announced the launch of CONNEXUS, a new and disruptive ecosystem and architecture aimed at enabling service providers, content providers and advertisers to become part of a connected value chain to deliver high-quality monetized video to subscribers in a multi-screen mobile and fixed broadband environment. CONNEXUS is the result of collaboration between, Spirent Communications, CommProve, BroadHop and Avvasi as founding members, who believe that mobile and fixed broadband service providers have a unique opportunity to enhance their service delivery architecture to dramatically increase relevance in the OTT value chain.

“Consumers are demanding a wide selection of broadcast-quality video on any device, at any time—and they’re willing to pay for it,” said Brian Partridge, vice president of network research at Yankee Group. “Service providers are currently facing an unprecedented win-win scenario: Improve customer satisfaction with OTT video by giving them the Quality of Experience they’re willing to pay for, therein monetizing this tremendous uptick in demand. CONNEXUS will bring the industry together to make this scenario a reality.”

The CONNEXUS architecture will focus on three primary goals:

Promoting the notion that service providers need to monetize OTT video and deliver a high quality of experience in order to fund the infrastructure capacity that will meet subscriber demand

Leveraging existing standards and associations to define how OTT video is delivered and monetized, and facilitate interoperability within the ecosystem

Accelerating the availability of integrated best of breed solutions across the OTT video ecosystem

OTT video streaming from sites such as YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer accounts for over 50% of Internet traffic. Service providers are already struggling to meet the demand that viewers place on their networks. A recent Nielsen study of media consumption trends reveals that the number of mobile OTT video consumers is growing by 41%, and the number of viewing hours is growing by 20%. This represents a significant opportunity for monetization but, because of the currently fragmented value chain, there is a substantial gap between total viewer penetration (10%) and the relative amount spent on advertising in that market (0.5%).

Service providers who want to monetize OTT video have an opportunity to create enormous value and therefore lucrative new revenue streams, however market fragmentation and lack of collaboration in the OTT value chain is preventing a pragmatic path to this opportunity. CONNEXUS is a disruptive architecture that enables a unique way of collaboration between vendors, service providers, content providers and advertisers to accomplish the shared goal of maximizing subscriber quality of experience, and delivering new video services and therefore new revenue streams for the entire ecosystem.

“The growing gap between exponential bandwidth demand and shallow revenue growth is no secret, and OTT video is the primary driver,” said Mate Prgin, president and CEO of Avvasi. “The CONNEXUS architecture seeks to address this issue by bringing together vendors committed to an open architecture for video service delivery. Reliable, high-quality video traffic management is the first step to QoE-differentiated subscription revenue which sets the stage for content monetization and, ultimately, ad revenue.”

BroadHop Inc., the leader in next generation policy control platforms for telecom operators, is among the first partners to join CONNEXUS. BroadHop enables service providers to control network resources in real time, monetize new services and applications, and deliver personalized, identity-based services in wireless and wireline networks. “Service providers need policy solutions that give them a competitive advantage and meet the unique needs of their particular infrastructure and subscriber base,” said Bill Diotte, CEO and President, BroadHop, Inc. “The BroadHop team works with service providers to help them successfully manage their network resources, build relationships with subscribers through individualized customer service and a superior user experience, and find creative new monetizing opportunities. We look forward to uniting with Avvasi, CommProve and Spirent under the common goals of CONNEXUS.”

The third founder member, CommProve enables network operators to gain real-time visibility into their operations to control financial performance, quality of experience and network performance. Dr. Lars Pedersen, CommProve CEO, said: “It’s an exciting time in the industry with the convergence of video, mobile and the Internet, and we are delighted to be part of today’s announcement. We look forward to working with the other members to bring video delivery solutions to market, enabling service providers to offer new video services, maximize the subscriber experience as well as maximize the return on their network investment.”

The fourth founding CONNEXUS partner, Spirent Communications, is a global leader in network, device and service testing and performance validation. Spirent’s integrated test & diagnostics and performance monitoring solution, Spirent TestCenter Live, enables service providers to take full advantage of Ethernet by delivering OTT services with greater efficiency, lower cost and increased scalability. Spirent’s vice president of service assurance, John Cunningham, commented: “Spirent’s leadership position in the service assurance of mobile backhaul and Ethernet/IP based services means that our solutions are a perfect fit in helping to deliver high quality OTT Video services. With Spirent TestCenter Live, providers have a means to monitor the performance of the mobile backhaul and Ethernet/IP circuits which deliver this service, while also isolating layer 2/3 issues when OTT QoS suffers.”

For further information on CONNEXUS, please register for The Yankee Group webinar on Nov 2nd.

Offers service providers an integrated multi-service, real-time customer satisfaction and OTT video QoE view

Ontario, Canada – May 24, 2011 – Avvasi, an award-winning company that helps service providers assure, improve and monetize video, is excited to announce the launch of its Catalyst Project in conjunction with Tektronix Communications, a leading provider of network diagnostics and service assurance solutions to service providers and equipment manufacturers. Sponsored by Orascom Telecom, this Catalyst Project, which will be showcased at the TM Forum Management World event in Dublin, is a significant collaboration that will enable service providers to receive unheralded intelligence analyzing their voice and video services, providing real-time customer satisfaction metrics and root-cause forensics.

Over-the-Top (OTT) video streaming from sites such as YouTube™, Netflix® and Hulu™ accounts for over 50% of internet traffic. As this continues to increase, service providers have found themselves in a situation where they are promising Quality of Experience (QoE) at levels that they are struggling to accurately deliver or measure. With the Catalyst Project, Avvasi and Tektronix Communications have combined to offer an integrated business intelligence application that brings together service assurance with network-centric views for critical analysis, giving service providers the ability to deliver on their promises to subscribers. The application provides the necessary equipment and infrastructure to identify the root cause of lowered QoE in all services – video, voice and data – and plan solutions to overcome this deficit.

Service providers who deploy a comprehensive QoE monitoring solution that includes OTT video monitoring will find themselves in a position to offer customers an improved quality of service, particularly around mobile video playback, which will help them monetize their offering and drive customer loyalty. They will also recognize the potential for new video-based services and subscription plans.

“Mobile service providers have to monitor and analyze the service their subscribers receive, and deliver on the promise of greater QoE” says Mate Prgin, Avvasi President and CEO. “The Catalyst Project illustrates how service providers can have their complete offering professionally scrutinized so that they can learn where service improvements need to be made and develop their network infrastructure around it. This project is the first major step towards a much needed standard for measuring video QoE”.

Sameh Yamany, Senior Director, CTO Office, Tektronix Communications, comments: “Offering video services presents a new revenue opportunity for service providers, but they must be monitored as part of an integrated solution to ensure the new service doesn’t have a detrimental effect on existing voice and data services. Using separate services to monitor each activity leads to confusion as to how best to align the services offered, and ultimately revenue streams will suffer. Both Tektronix Communications and Avvasi can draw upon years of experience within their respective fields to provide a comprehensive, in-depth experience via this Catalyst Project”.

The Catalyst Project already has its first client. Project sponsor, Orascom Telecom, a leading international telecommunications company operating in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, recognizes the need for the integrated solution provided by Avvasi and Tektronix Communications. “While voice service is managed as a form of network data, the quality of voice service has never been measured as a factor of packet loss and latency. Knowing this, we have well-established tools to measure and rate voice quality,” said Hesham Kamel, Head of Mobile & Fixed Core Solutions, ORASCOM TELECOM. “Yet, when it comes to video traffic, many vendors measure quality as if it were another form of downloaded web content. Much like voice service, a standardized method for accurately measuring how the customer experiences video is needed. Such a system must be integrated into voice and data analytics systems, and provide an accurate and scalable business intelligence that can be deployed through our many properties around the globe”.

Visit stand 12 in Forumville at TM Forum Management World, May 23-26 in Dublin and join Avvasi and Tektronix Communications for a live demonstration and learn how this project is contributing to the eTom/SID framework to support a new, integrated standard by which all services, including video, will be measured.

It illustrates the depth and breadth of innovative technologies developed in Canada and is widely considered to be a leading source of intelligence on Canada’s ICT industry.

“The innovative companies recognized on this years Top 25 Up and Comers listing represent Canada’s most innovative, disruptive and progressive start-ups,” said Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of Branham Group. “Avvasi’s next generation video networking technology is poised to reshape the approach that service providers take when monetizing videos on their networks.”

Solving the Greatest Challenge in Mobile Video
The growth of video traffic has far outpaced the development of analytics and business intelligence tools required to measure video service quality and usage trends. Not only does the inability to measure video quality risk unprecedented churn rates, it most certainly hampers any attempt to monetize video. Now more than ever, service providers need to be able to capture, analyze and understand the subscriber experience. At the core of Avvasi solutions is a unique technology that offers a scalable, passive measurement capability that reports quality of experience (QoE) with on-deck and over-the-top (OTT) video content such as Netflix®, YouTube™, and iTunes™.

“We are honored to be selected as an Up and Comer on the 2011 Edition of the Branham300,” said Mate Prgin, president and CEO of Avvasi Inc. “This is a strong endorsement for our technology, and it also highlights the challenges and opportunities that video presents in the mobile and fixed networking markets.”

Service Providers Leverage Avvasi Q-VUE to Monitor Perceived Subscriber QoE for Over-the-Top Streaming Video and Gather Business Intelligence to Fuel New Video Services

Waterloo, ONTARIO — February 14, 2011 — Avvasi Inc., a leading innovator of video traffic management solutions for fixed and mobile service providers, today announced a major release of Avvasi Q-VUE version 2.0 which introduces several new capabilities, including video analytics for Netflix, Flash RTMP and Silverlight. These new capabilities are incremental to already supported protocols such as Flash and RTP. Avvasi is showcasing Q-VUE 2.0 at Mobile World Congress 2011, Feb 14-17 in Barcelona, Spain.

“Faced with the unrelenting growth of video traffic, service providers must deploy technologies to manage bandwidth demand and assure service quality as they develop new products to tap video-related revenue opportunities while offsetting operational costs,” said Monica Paolini, Senza Fili Consulting. “Video analytics enables mobile operators to understand how video traffic impacts the network, and identify the emerging subscriber usage trends.”

Avvasi Q-VUE supports several solutions tailored for service providers with exploding over-the-top video traffic, including the Video Analytics solution and the Video Service Assurance solution. Avvasi Video Analytics Solution provides a rich collection of unparalleled video traffic analytics tools that enable service providers to monitor, store, collate and analyze data related to the video network traffic using a rich and interactive user interface. With Avvasi, service providers can capture detailed information about the subscriber’s quality of experience (QoE). This helps service providers manage customer relationships to reduce churn, troubleshoot network issues based on video QoE triggers and maximize revenue. With Avvasi Video Service Assurance solution, the collected QoE scores are output as UDR records and retrieved by OSS and BSS systems and ingested into higher-level mediation, billing or CRM systems.

Avvasi Q-VUE 2.0 runs on Avvasi’s Xperium platform, a carrier-grade, ATCA-based shelf that provide the maximum flexibility and scalability needed to help service providers address massive video traffic growth. This architecture is upgradable to include additional capabilities beyond video analytics and QoE monitoring.

“Over and over, our customers and partners are telling us that they are hindered by the gap between typical network analytics tools, like DPI probes that measure QoS, and their need for accurate analytics that provide much needed video traffic business intelligence to better serve their customers,” said Mate Prgin, president and CEO of Avvasi Inc. “Avvasi Q-VUE bridges this gap, delivering real-time, accurate and scalable measurements of what the customer is actually experiencing, and identifying usage trends that guarantee service assurance and drive revenue-generation.”

Avvasi solutions enable service providers to strike a balance between reducing network operational costs, while preserving their customer’s experience. At the core of Avvasi solutions is a unique technology that offers a scalable, passive measurement capability that reports video-based QoE. Much like MOS scores, this perceptual measurement accurately reflects the subscriber’s perceived experience with video content. This innovative technology provides a powerful analytics and assurance solution when combined with congestion awareness and the ability to break down video traffic by device, source, content, media format, media duration and network topology.

Join Avvasi at MWC 2011
Join Avvasi in Hall 2.0, stand 2A97 (Ontario Pavilion) for live demonstrations of Avvasi’s suite of video traffic management solutions. To arrange a meeting, please contact Mark Sangster, msangster [at] Avvasi [dot] com.

Product Availability
Avvasi Q-VUE Version 2.0 will be generally available in late Q1 of 2011. Avvasi solutions support HSPA, CDMA, LTE, WiMax, and IP networks.
